A large lizard stops in to visit with Uncle Bob Devine today. Cordelia the saltwater crocodile is Bob's guest. She is 80 years old and over 17 feet long. That makes her a senior citizen and nearly full grown. One more thing, she is from northern Australia.

Trouble is brewing at Trappers Landing in Big North Country. Roy Westgate's trading post is busy with trappers who should be working their lines. Trappers Abe and Jeff tell of losing pelts from their trap lines.  Mac and Shorty say they followed tracks they have never seen before. Then Big Jack arrives to say he's seen wolverine tracks. The wolverine is the most feared animal in the wild. Trappers believe a wolverine killed Beaver Dan in Alaska. The news creates a panic and causes most of the trappers to quit for the year. Roy's trading post will close if the trappers quit. Roy asks Bill to help. But how can Bill fight superstition and the fear it brings?

There is no drought, but the Rio Perdido River runs dry without explanation. Fred Martin, a young lettuce farmer, and a tough old cattle rancher Longhorn Laribee are both in danger of losing everything without the river. Bill and the boys investigate and try to bring the river back. Henry may have the key to the problem in a book he’s studying.

Stumpy and Henry go fishing on Old Thunderhead. Strange sounds start coming from the mountain. Then a seismologist, Mr. Chenowith, arrives to investigate strange readings coming from the mountain. Earthquakes trap Henry and Stumpy and threaten their lives. Then Old Thunderhead actually begins to move, leaving huge chasms and blocking all the mountain's roads. Bill must find a way to rescue his friends before it's too late.
