Uncle Bob Devine gets a visit from Betsy the Burying Beetle. Betsy is a small black beetle who can lift 100 times her own weight with her legs. The American burying beetle used to live in 35 of the states in the USA. Now they are found in only 10 states. Betsy and her mate find dead animals such as mice and birds. They move the dead to their den and burynit for their young to eat. To find out more listen to today's Nature Corner.

Henry hears stories of an antique steam train abandoned way up in the Shady Mountains. The engine belonged to the Three Rs - the Rimrock, Rawhide, and Ragweed railroad. Henry goes hiking in search of the valuable old train. Henry's tough walk is rewarded when he discovers an old engine in a shed. Two men find the train first and are determined to take the engine and sell it to a collector. They tie up Henry and fire up the train to steal it. Will Bill discover the thieves, stop them, AND rescue Henry?

Henry falls in love with a magnificent wild white stallion that he and his friend Pyute see on the prairie. Henry finds a way to capture the horse and keep it in a hidden location. Bill tells him that capturing a wild horse will break its spirit and kill it. Now Henry must decide if keeping his special horse is worth the cost.

Stumpy runs into old friend Miles Ashby at the bank. Miles was just turned down for a loan. He needs the money so he can keep drilling for oil on his property. He thinks there is oil on his land even though no one has found oil anywhere else in the area. Folks call Miles' well "Ashby's Folly." Tully Philmore offers to buy Miles’ land and his oil drilling supplies. Stumpy wants desperately to help Miles but how?

Tornadoes have never struck anywhere near Knotty Pine before, and no one can believe they will strike now. Is Bill wrong or will lives be lost in the coming whirlwind?

Bill and Lieutenant Larson of the US Aeronautical Survey Team find Old Man Margrave tied up and half dead in his cabin in Lost Canyon. Two thugs, Hawk and Banjo Eyes, did this the old gentleman to get his treasure hidden up in the mountain cliffs. The key to finding the treasure is a notebook hidden in the cabin. So why does Bill want a football uniform, a pilot's helmet, 100 feet of rope, and 10 pounds of beef to find the treasure? How will Bill, Henry, and Lt. Larson keep the two crooks from stealing or destroying the treasure? What is this mysterious treasure anyway? You'll have to listen to find out.

Lloyd used to be interested in God and church but now is only interested in money. The buffalo could mean even more profit for Lloyd. Can Bill and Stumpy find a way to rekindle Lloyd’s faith?

Angus, one of Bill’s rangers, is devastated when his son Steve is hit by a car and killed. Angus is so grief stricken that he wants revenge on the man who hit Steve. The driver is terribly sorry for the accident and understands how Angus feels. Bill must step in to stop Angus from hurting the driver.

The Deep Country

Col. Anders and his wife get lost in the deep country while they are on vacation. The colonel’s assistant tells the Anders’ daughter that her parents are missing. Those two plus the slow-motion folks who live in the deep country make Bill’s job of finding the Anders nearly impossible.

This is one of Ranger Bill's very first adventures. It was probably first broadcast in 1950 when the show was several 15-minute adventures aired on Monday afternoons in the greater Chicago area only. Our cast may have also performed this show live to Sunday Schools and church groups to help advertise the broadcasts.

Every ranger wants Arnie Nelson's cushy job as flying game warden, including Bill. Arnie takes a month's vacation, so Col. Anders makes Bill the flying game warden. Bill and his rangers find out Arnie's job isn't so easy. Bill must cover a huge section of forest, lakes and rivers, as well as protect and rescue both vacationers as well as the wildlife. And there are poachers, especially the Bixon family. Find out with Bill and the boys just how hard and dangerous the flying game warden's job really is!

8-year-old Leo Foster faints while taking a walk. Officer O’Roark sees the boy collapse and calls an ambulance. At the hospital, X-rays confirm the worst. Leo has a serious heart defect requiring major surgery. The surgery requires stopping Leo’s heart and tapping into another heart during the surgery. Leo has a rare blood type and needs someone whose blood matches his. The hunt is on for Leo’s second heart!

The Salesman

Bill saves a child who wandered into the street and is hit by the car himself. Bill is slightly injured and needs just a little rest at home. Gill Major, an insurance salesman, visits Bill to try to sell him life insurance. Bill turns the tables on Gill and tries to sell him Eternal Life Insurance. Gill is not a Christian and has no interest in eternal life insurance. But can Gill ignore insurance whose premium was paid in full 2000 years ago, provides protection after death, guarantees the insured eternal life, and the insured person is the beneficiary? Henry is taking a long-distance bus trip home to Knotty Pine. He meets the Cavanaugh family and several other of the bus passengers. It’s getting dark and the mountain roads are getting rough, winding, and narrow. Rains have caused landslides, damaging the road and trapping the bus.

 "The Handcar Race".


The Fireball Express is streaking north toward the Knotty Pine region at 100 miles per hour with 400 souls on board. "Unc" McFadden is the rail dispatcher at Junction City. His job is making sure that the trains under his care get to their destinations safely. That includes the Fireball Express. Heavy rains followed by flash flooding threaten the rail trestles and bridges near Knotty Pine. To be safe, Unc sends a trestle tester engine to check the northern line especially the old trestle over 800-foot-deep Cougar Canyon. What will the tester crew find? This doesn't sound like any kind of a race to me. What does a handcar have to do with the whole problem? And what does this have to do with our rangers?
